Genentech has become a worldwide leader in biotechnology, pioneering new drugs such as Avastin to treat cancer. In a few weeks, construction should begin in Dixon of a new research lab that will augment its long-standing research work in South San Francisco. Genentech also employs almost 1,000 in its Vacaville manufacturing campus. About 160 employees will work in the Dixon facility, which will take a few years to build. Nearby UC Davis should be a key source for the needed researchers and technicians. More doctorates in the life sciences are granted by UCD than any university in America.
