Senate President Pro-Tem Don Perata spoke to reporters after the vote was taken:

“Thank God this is over.  I am still perplexed why it took so long…”

The hold out was due in part to additional spending cuts that Republicans wanted.  Governor Schwarzenegger has promised to make those cuts in the budget with his line-item veto power.  Another deal sought by the G.O.P will prevent lawsuits from being filed on bond-funded transportation and flood improvement projects over global warming concerns.

Senate Republican leader Dick Ackerman was one of the two G.O.P lawmakers who finally voted for the plan.  He says the wait was worth it.

“I think we achieved the goals that we started out to and I’m happy with it.”

Governor Schwarzenegger issued a statement calling it a responsible budget.  He is expected to sign it by the end of the week.
