Senator Barbara Boxer visited Folsom to check out construction projects underway at the Dam.  She’s pushing for more federal funding for improvements that include a new road and a new spillway. She says the work is desperately needed because a large scale flood would cripple the economy.

“Sacramento is the largest metropolitan area in the country with less than 100-year flood protection.”

Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo says the projects will offer necessary 200-year flood protection.

“The hydrology has changed, the weather has changed, we’re getting bigger storms and we need to operate this dam differently.”

The federal bill authorizing more than six-hundred million dollars for the projects has been approved in the House.  It moves onto the Senate next and then the President’s desk…  Senator Boxer says President Bush’s approval for the funding is uncertain… But she says there could be enough votes to override his veto—if and when that happens.
