The overall crime rate for the first six months of 2007 shows a 4.2 drop compared with the same time in 2006. The only major jump in crime was a 19% rise in rapes.
Sergeant Matt Young with the department says it’s higher because more victims are reporting the crime…and he says groups that support sexual assault victims are helping victims come forward.
"We’ve really seen the community – WEAVE, My Sister’s House – these other community-based organizations and programs that are very supportive to the victims that really encourage them to come out and report these crimes."
Young says in about 90% of the rapes reported, the victim knew the suspect. The new figures also show that murders fell by 37%, car thefts are down by 16% and aggravated assaults dropped by 13%.
