Spokeswoman Celeste Ingrid says adoptions are down 50% from this time last month.

"We’re just overwhelmed. Last month, July, we took in a total of more than 1,800 animals of which more than 1,000 of those were cats and kittens. This month we’ve taken in almost 400 cats and kittens so the problem is large."

She speculates that the reason adoptions are down is because summer is coming to an end and families are getting ready for school again.

The animal shelter is holding adoption events this weekend in Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove.
