Sutter General and Sutter Memorial missed their mid-year budget by $17 million … so cost cutting is underway. The Sutter Medical Center, which embraces both hospitals, will lay off 41 employees in a variety of positions, including some in direct patient care. Seven employees will have their hours trimmed … and managers are expected to shave up to 10% from certain supply costs. Sutter Memorial will close when the Sutter’s massive midtown expansion project is finished, perhaps by the end of 2010. The layoffs affect less than one percent of the staff at the two facilities.
