Wine lovers, your commute to wine country is going to get easier. In fact, “wine country” is now “wine city” these days, with Sacramento’s second urban winery preparing to open this August. Jon Affonso will bring his winery, Rail Bridge Cellars, into a former auto-body shop on north 16th Street in Sacramento. He plans to make 1,800 cases this year and sell to local restaurants and retail shops. While the site won’t have a tasting room, he’s considering finding space for one in midtown.

Rail Bridge Cellars is the second winery to open in Sacramento. It joins Revolution Wines on P Street, which opened this month.
A move to the city isn’t just trendy. Opening a winery in an existing commercial building is a cheaper way for young winemakers to start their companies.
