If you’ve lived in the area for a while, you know that hundreds of athletes will run, bike and kayak along the American River Parkway.
But maybe you didn’t know that the money raised from entrance fees goes to a county program called Therapeutic Recreation Services. Holly Dallas heads it. She says TRS uses leisure activities to help people with mental retardation and other challenges become more confident and independent.
"You may start in a smaller situation and maybe one to one or go out with a group of your friends and then go out in the community and do other things without us and it’s pretty cool the way we’ve seen people grow over the years."
Last year, Eppie’s Great Race raised more than $42,315 for TRS, that’s about 20% of the program’s annual budget.
