The State Office of Emergency Services has opened centers at fairgrounds in 13 counties, including Fresno, Sacramento, Ventura, Los Angeles and Shasta. They’ll be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. until at least Friday. Director Henry Renteria says it’s important for everyone to prepare for the heat:
"If you have an underlying health condition, arrange for a friend to check on you. Create a cooler environment. Make sure all window air conditioners are operating properly. Make sure that you have weather strips on doors and sills. Cover windows with drapes.”
Renteria also advises people to drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous physical activity during the afternoon. The state has also set up a toll free number with information on protecting yourself from the heat.
The state’s heat information number is 1-877-435-7021. It’s operational from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
