So what exactly are illegal fireworks? Captain Jeff Lynch is with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

"If it flies or explodes it’s illegal. Most illegal fireworks do both – they fly and then they blow up and they’re very dangerous."

He says they’re dangerous because you can’t control them. If you launch a bottle rocket in the air you have no way to guide the burning object back down.

"If it lands in a dry field, if it lands on a wood shake roof, if it lands in a group of kids, it is going to seriously injure or do some serious damage to property."

Lynch says people caught with illegal fireworks will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law – from a fine to jail time. And he says they’re asking for the public’s help. If you see any illegal fireworks, report them to local officials.
