City Council members have approved up to $600,000 in loans to five SROs which house low-income residents. During a heat wave last summer, three SRO residents living in rooms without air conditioners died. City Councilman Ray Tretheway says the upgrades will be expensive but worth it.
"Everybody knows every retrofit costs twice as much as what you expect it to and if it makes the electrical component of each of these safer and also makes it more comfortable I think it’s just a very good project."
Money for the ten-year, no-interest loans will come from the city’s Community Development reserve fund.
