California’s Lieutenant Governor signed the proclamation in the place of Governor Schwarzenegger who is in Europe.  At a Capitol news conference Garamendi said it moves the process a step closer toward getting Tahoe-area residents federal financial assistance. He called the blaze a devastating situation.

“So this is a very difficult day for people in Tahoe and for those of us who know and love that place…”
The Lieutenant Governor serves as acting Governor while Schwarzenegger is out of state.   Schwarzenegger was first briefed on the fire on Sunday afternoon within a few hours after the blaze broke out. He then received hourly briefings Monday.  A spokesman says the Governor will tour the area once his presence does not impact the fire fighting operation.
