UC Merced, opened its doors just two years ago in the fall of 2005.  It’s received plenty of research money since then – about 34 million dollars overall.  But the first two cancer research grants totaling a mere 90 thousand dollars are still significant.
School of Natural Sciences Dean Maria Pallavicini says they will elevate the university’s profile in the medical community.  Which is important to UC Merced as it plans to build a medical school:
Biomedical research is one type of research that is critical in creating the foundation for a medical school.

Campus officials are working on plans for the med school now. Ground will broken within the decade.  As for the grants, they’ll be specifically used for breast cancer research and inquiry into how hormones affect cancer.
