Stephen Ferguson – the city’s Chief Information Officer – told council members that a company called Sacramento Metro Connect will offer an ad-based service free to the public.

"So there is a provision to advertise on the free service with this deployment. The contract term is 5 years with two 5 year renewable terms and SMC has agreed to meet the city’s requirement for an aesthetically pleasing deployment."

…those aesthetically pleasing WiFi radio receivers are small white boxes that will be mounted on street lights and traffic poles throughout the city.

WiFi could be running in the downtown area in 3-months and in the entire city, including low-income neighborhoods, by the year 2010.
