Sacramento City Council member Rob Fong took the lead on the issue pushing for free wireless internet service for the entire city by the year two thousand ten:
I thing it’s going to result in great efficiencies once people come to realize you can come to do business in Sacramento 24/7.
Wifi stands for wireless fidelity.
Andrew Johnson, with competitor Comcast, says the challenge is for city officials to provide reliable service:
We think the technology in particular is unproven on the scale that’s been discussed in large cities such as Sacramento.
Fong admits it’s mostly smaller cities around the U.S. that have extensive WIFI service. In California, only 18 cities have functioning WIFI.
