Surewest Communications made the nation’s fastest Internet speed available in December, for a price. Six months later, only 14 people have anteed up the $260 a month for this service, 50 megabits per second. It uploads 50 times faster than the typical digital service in a home … and it downloads a high definition movie in just 17 minutes. In Japan, Korea and parts of China, 50 megabits is the norm … and customers pay only $50 a month, because it’s far cheaper to run the fiber connections to dense apartment buildings than suburban homes. Both AT&T and Comcast will probably have higher speeds available in Sacramento by next year.
