18-year-old Florin High School student Stephanie Awrey won a new car in the competition designed to discourage high school seniors from playing hookey.
Friday morning, contest finalists attempted to start one of eight cars. Despite a little difficulty, Awrey got hers to start.
"And then I hear 'Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engine' and I tried to turn the key and nothing happened. And I see the clutch and so I just slam the clutch and it started and I was like 'wow, I actually got this.' I was so happy."
Awrey wins a $20,000 gift certificate from Elk Grove Auto Mall to be used towards the purchase of a car. The seven runners-up each get a $200 savings bond.
