City Council members Tuesday voted to establish the position. Jay Schenirer with the Mayor’s Commission on Sacramento Youth told council members prevention is the key.
"It’s really important to get after the problems of youth violence and we need to do something about that, so that’s two fold, the first is getting mentors for all of the youth in the city so that they have the adult-youth relationships that we know by research are so important, the other is a youth resources coordinator."
Along with the new Youth Czar position, the council approved creating an Office of Youth Development. The office will coordinate after-school programs, internships and other programs designed to keep kids out of trouble.
Most of the funding to pay for the new office will come from grants and city general fund money.
