The Railyards project is getting a streamlined look. The new plan, submitted by owner Thomas Enterprises Inc. at the city’s urging, will fit in with downtown’s flat, grid-patterned streets. Original plans included canals and wide, twisting streets. They have been nixed for an expanded theater district, thousands of new homes, 1.3 million square feet of restaurants and shops, and 2.4 million square feet of office space. The public can view the new plan at a community meeting scheduled for early June. The city and developer still have dozens of details to hash out, including the pace of development, number of homes, and, of course, who will help foot the $550 million needed to build streets and sewer lines and refurbish the site’s railroad buildings.
