Governor Schwarzenegger has issued an executive order authorizing California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection – or Cal-Fire, to staff additional crews, engines, bulldozers and planes where needed:

“So the fire season has come very early this year, and we must be prepared.”

Schwarzenegger says he’s also authorized the use of a special supertanker.  Cal-Fire’s Mike Jarvis says it’s a great tool:

“The tank on it carries 12-thousand gallons of retardant. Now, our S2 tankers that we use, that most people are familiar with, those carry 12-hundred gallons of retardant.  So what you’ve got is ten times the amount of retardant can be dropped in one drop.”

The order also authorizes more fire safety inspectors and people to man lookout towers where needed.  The Governor’s order came as fires burned in Southern California’s Griffith Park.
