Registered Nurse Alice Colocino flew in from Los Angeles for the rally – which was sponsored in part by the California Nurses Association.  She was there to support a bill by Democratic Senator Sheila Kuehl to create a so-called “single-payer” health system, where everyone would be covered under a model similar to Medicare.  She says the current system is unfair:

“Depending on what a patient’s insurance is determines how long they can stay in the hospital if they’re critically ill – what type of after care they get – what type of rehabilitation services they receive.”

She says a single-payer model would level the playing field.  A similar bill by Kuehl was approved by the legislature last year but vetoed by the Governor.  He said the plan created state-run healthcare, something he couldn’t support.  He has proposed his own health reform plan, which would require all Californians to purchase health insurance.
