The gift is from Robert C. Powell and his wife Jeannette. They’re giving it to the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

A few moments after the donation was announced, UOP President Don DeRosa described it as a landmark event.

"Historic day in the university’s history. It is the 6th largest gift given to a college or university in California."

Though no specific plans have been made for the money, DeRosa says he’ll be working with the Powell’s to come up with some ideas.

"We will look to perhaps focus on 4 or 5 distinct areas that we will insure that we have exemplary programs."

DeRosa says he also hopes to set up a scholarship program to make sure that UOP is accessible to students of all economic backgrounds.

Powell, who built the Pavilions Shopping center and Campus Commons development in Sacramento, was a regent at UOP in the early 1990s.
