C C Myers bid was under a million dollars – just $867,000, to be exact. The seven bids ranged as high as $6 and a half million from a Concord firm. The fallen connector linked I 80 with Interstate 580 in the MacArthur freeway, just east of the Bay Bridge. A fuel tanker accident and fire melted the steel supporting the connector, which collapsed. The Myers bid probably takes into account the $200,000 a day incentive payment for delivering the project ahead of schedule. Myers firm won renown … and a big bonus … for rebuilding a section of the Santa Monica Expressway two months ahead of schedule after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
