Labor Market Consultant David Lyons with the state Employment Development Department says there were gains in the retail sector. But he says one are with little growth is housing construction.
"However, the heavy building and larger projects, engineering projects, etc., has a lot of activity so that’s kind of picking up the slack in the construction market."
Those “heavy building” projects include reconstruction of the train trestle that burned down near Cal Expo last month and various infrastructure improvements.
The local jobless rate in March was 4.9% – down from 5.3% in February. Meantime, the state's unemployment rate remained unchanged last month at 4.8%.
