The demolition comes 13-months after city council members used eminent domain to close both Washington Market and Days Market.

Councilwoman Lauren Hammond says they did it because the stores were bringing crime and blight to the neighborhood of mostly single-family homes.

"Both those liquor stores were actually non-conforming uses so they will be torn down and we will build single-family homes and give a family an opportunity for an affordable home in each location."

The new housing is expected to be finished in the spring of 2008. Saturday morning’s demolition kick-off will also include a community march starting at 10 AM.
