Councilman Rob Fong is proposing it. He says it’s hard to imagine anyone who’s done more for the city than the late congressman. Councilwoman Lauren Hammond agrees but says naming the chambers shouldn’t be rushed.

"We need to kind of slow down and think about how we do this right and respectfully if the chamber should be named at all and I think that everybody else who may feel that way would be afraid to say so out loud because it will be misinterpreted, it will be politicized and that’s just not fair."

The city manager’s office will come back to the council with recommendations on how to proceed.

Robert Matsui was Sacramento’s congressional representative for 26-years and a city council member before that. He died in 2005.
