Vanessa Martin with Sacramento County’s Department of Animal Care and Regulation says once the reality of caring for the animals sets in, people dump them at shelters. Sometimes, she says, rescue groups are able to take in the animals.

"But a lot of times there just isn’t enough space in the shelter so unfortunately some of the animals do have to be euthanized but we do try to place them in loving homes as much as we can."

She says the decision to add a pet to your family takes careful research and thought and should not be done during a holiday.
