Caltrans and the CHP have dropped the speed limit from 65 MPH to 55 between Lincoln and Sheridan.

"In that area on Highway 65 we have actually taken a rash of fatal accidents and the majority of reasons for those crashes is unsafe passing."

CHP officer Kelly Baraga says the revised speed limit is in addition to mandatory headlight use. And Rochelle Jenkins with Caltrans says they also recently installed rumble strips between the two-lanes to remind drivers that passing there is illegal.

"We do have some concerns about head on accidents from people speeding and making unsafe passing maneuvers. That 14 mile stretch has also been made a no passing zone."

CHP Officer Baraga says they’ve already noticed a 60% drop in fatalities since they made the stretch a mandatory headlight zone last year.
