U.S. government figures show almost everyone who enters the military signs up to contribute part of their paycheck to the GI education package. But nationwide, about one third who pay, never use those benefits.
Jeff Weston, coordinator of Veterans Affairs at Sacramento State, says vets are often scared to face college, after spending years within the military’s disciplinary and social structure:
A big thing with the veterans is….they’re on their own again. All of a sudden you’re alone. You know you don’t have that military safety net anymore.
Under Governor’ Schwarzenegger’s year old Troops to College program, Weston and other college administrators around the state are working to provide more support services for veterans so they can feel comfortable while getting an education.
