ARCO arena has had that name since it opened in 1988, and the name will stay there according to a deal announced by the Maloof family, owner of the Sacramento Kings and Monarchs basketball teams. Terms of the agreement weren’t released. The arena has outlived its usefulness, and an NBA spokesman chose this announcement to underscore the need for a new facility. As for ARCO, that company doesn’t exist any longer. It’s one of four oil companies now fused into the corporate entity known as BP … but the ARCO brand lives on, primarily in the ARCO am/pm stations around the state.
