James Barnes with Union Pacific Railroad says the bridge is out-of-commission until further notice.
"With the trestle in the state that it’s in, this will impact service on that particular line both freight and passenger service. It’s premature to know when service will be restored on that line."
The trestle supports a main rail artery leading into Sacramento. The huge plume of black smoke drew a crowd of hundreds of pedestrians from nearby hotels and stores. It crippled rush-hour traffic on the Capital City Freeway bordering the state fairgrounds.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
Meantime the fire has disrupted the Capital Corridor passenger train service between Auburn and Sacramento. However, Cliff Cole with Amtrak says they’ll be bussing commuters starting Friday morning.
"We are in the process of formulating what looks to be a long term plan to deal with this but this one as everyone knows took everyone by surprise so we’re just taking it day by day."
He says service will run as usual at train stations west of Sacramento.
