One of the more than a dozen bills would require offenders convicted of a gang-related crime to wear a G-P-S monitor during parole and probation.  Another would allow law enforcement to freeze a known gang members’ assets.  Republican Senator George Runner says it’s an appropriate penalty:

“The federal government freezes terrorists’ assets right now, and these particular gang members should be treated just like terrorists because they are indeed terrorizing our streets.”

The other proposals include measures to tackle gang activity in prison, crack down on graffiti and vandalism, and create a 1,000-fooot gang-free zone around parks.  Runner says they’re hoping for bi-partisan support.  But so far, he has no commitment from Democratic leaders.
