Elk Grove Considers Red Light Cameras
Red light runners in Elk Grove could soon be caught on camera…if the city council moves forward with a plan for a red light photo enforcement program.

Mayor Jim Cooper wants to decrease the number of collisions caused by red light runners at the city’s busiest intersections:
The really big thing is just changing people’s behavior, is to slow down. Obviously, we’ve seen a lot of tragic accidents in the Sacramento region, and what we’re looking at is reducing that.
Cooper says at least one third of the crashes at Elk Grove intersections are caused by cars running red lights.
He says statistics show once cameras are installed, red light running declines by 40 to 60 percent.
The city council must decide whether to negotiate a contract with a traffic systems company to provide the red light cameras, as well as how much to spend on them and how many to get.
