Weather forecasters say heavy snow is a welcome change from last month.
"Yeah, we’re happy to see it given how late the season got started, how dry most of January and the first part of February was."
Steve Goldstein with the National Weather Service in Sacramento says the storm is coming from the Gulf of Alaska and merging with moisture from the tropics.
"It sort of looks like we’ll have another system moving through maybe Wednesday, Thursday time frame."
Chains are mandatory on all roads over mountain passes. But Sergeant Mike Stewart with the CHP in South Lake Tahoe says you should avoid driving in the sierra all together.
"It is snowing fairly heavy so if you don’t have to come up here – don’t. But if you’ve already made arrangements and everything then give yourself lots of time."
Stewart says if you absolutely have to drive through the mountains make sure you don’t follow other cars too closely to prevent sliding into them after braking. Also bring extra clothes, blankets and food.
