More than two dozen lawmakers went on the prison tour.  At a news conference before, Assembly GOP Leader Mike Villines says he wants to gather information for a discussion on prison reforms —one he says has been stalled in the legislature. Republicans say they believe more prisons must be built and criticized a proposal—set forth in various forms—for a sentencing review commission.  Villines says that will only reduce prisoners’ time behind bars.

“As usual our policies are common sense.  Bad people should be in prison.  Bad people shouldn’t be released out where they could hurt others..”

The Senate Majority Leader Democrat Gloria Romero says the Republicans don’t understand the purpose of a commission—which is to bring consistency to the application of sentencing laws.
