Re-examining Prison Sentences

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero has introduced a bill to create an independent commission.  Its job: gather the facts about sentences – and recommend new guidelines.  Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed a mostly-advisory commission, but Romero says that’s not enough:

“It should not be merely advisory and end up as another report that some other legislator will point to 30 years from now. It should command accountability.  It should have teeth.”

Backers of the plan admit a re-vamp is a long-term undertaking.  And a federal takeover is a short-term threat. So they hope establishing a commission would buy them some time.  Republicans who oppose the move argue it could mean early release of prisoners.
