If you remember the heat related deaths of last summer, Bill Martin, Emergency Services Manager for Yolo County says similar precautions and vigilance are needed with the onset of cold weather.

The elderly and the people who don’t have the mobility or may be living in sub standard housing, where they don’t have the amount of heat required need to be a little more cautious, and certainly the friends and relatives or even neighbors should feel inclined to check on their elderly neighbors and relatives to make sure they are properly cared for.

Martin also encourages citizens to make sure pets and livestock are adequately protected from the cold and that outdoor pipes containing water are properly secured and drained.  Special care should be taken with portable heat sources, especially units that emit carbon monoxide and have an open flame.
