Joe Heckel – the city’s Community Development Director – says certain commercial and historic districts would have to comply.

"And the intent is to really update our planning and design standards for the community so we can in one way protect our historic character but also allow for that character to be carried forth in new projects that are proposed to the city." 

City planners have been weighing the changes for the past few years and a new proposal will be unveiled tonight Tuesday. It would affect about 1,600 parcels of land in the area.
