In the 1970s, only a few
thousand revelers came out to celebrate New Years in
South Lake Tahoe
. By 2001, the
crowd had swelled to 60,000, and this year’s event is expected to be even larger. As in past years, a section of Route 50 will
be closed to traffic for several hours to accommodate the boisterous crowd. For Douglas County Sheriff, Sergeant Tom
Mezzeta, aside from the cold …
The largest challenge we have are those who consume
too much alcohol and they get rowdy … we do have fights that occur … we have
issues with juveniles … and we kind of dread it as it rolls around each year
because we know what we’re in for.
A long and diverse list of
agencies coordinate to police the event including the Nevada Department of
Prisons and the FBI. Weather has kept
huge crowds away the last few years, but forecasters predict only a slight
chance of snow Sunday evening with lows in the teens.
