Assemblyman Mark Leno has announced the same sex marriage bill he’ll introduce is nearly identical to the measure that was approved in 2005 by the legislature but vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger.
The proposal would amend state law to define marriage as a civil contract between two persons. The bill’s sponsor is Equality California. Executive Director Geoff Kors says he thinks the chances are good that the legislature will pass the measure again… and that the Governor would sign it over likely opposition from within his own party.
“He has broken with his party on many lesbian, gay bisexual transgender rights bills that Equality California has sponsored in the past…”
The Campaign for Children and Families has already voiced its opposition to the measure—as it has in the past-- calling the bill a blatant attack on marriage rights.
