The Ski Area Citizens
Coalition has ranked Alpine Meadows the third best ski resort in the nation for
it’s environmental policies. Alpine runs
80% of their vehicles on Bio diesel and in a new trend, has purchased green energy
credits to offset 100% of their electrical energy use. At the other end of the spectrum,
Kirkwood
is ranked third from last in the nation. Report editor Ben Doon says they gave
Kirkwood
an F.
They want to do extensive real estate development
into undisturbed lands … they’re proposing more terrain into undisturbed lands
… and in the process, they are filling in wet lands, cutting old growth and
impacting species habitats.
Sugar Bowl and Heavenly both
received a C grade, but
Doon
adds that they too may have failed if it were not
for the purchase of sustainable energy credits.
The resorts are judged on a list of thirty one criteria, addressing a
wide range of environmental impacts.
