Only 2 percent of California’s immigrants from Latin America live in Sacramento … contrary to popular opinion. And a smaller percentage than elsewhere in the state are of Mexican heritage. The Business Journal study also found that the Sacramento region in fact ranks third in the U.S., behind only New York and L.A., in the sheer volume of immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Sacramento is also a major destination for Fijians, who concentrate in nursing, janitorial and elder-care employment. As for the minority of immigrants here illegally, analysts place that number between 2 and 7% of the region’s work force.
