During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, Feinstein said the bill would require sports teams to get the approval of city officials when they want to leave town and take the town’s name along.

"When a team just announces that it may pull out and go to another community and take the name of the city - and the name in this case of the heritage of the city with them - it causes great consternation. You can’t move to Santa Clara and call yourself a 49er, you’re not."

The proposal comes after the 49ers said they plan on moving to Santa Clara. State

Assemblyman Mark Leno is also looking into introducing a bill in the Legislature to block the team’s move.
