Sacramento County Undersheriff George Anderson told the County Board of Supervisors Tuesday that one possible solution might be to introduce a 311 number. 

"Too many people, it’s too easy to punch 911 and just say ‘sorry, and then by the way can you tell me what the phone number for this is or I just needed to have this question answered’ so creating another simple to use number will go a long way to alleviate that problem."

San Francisco and a few other cities around the country have opened 311 call centers. The Sacramento Region Public Safety Committee is planning a public outreach campaign to get public input and report back to the Board of Supervisors in 6 months.
