The Sunrise Marketplace in Citrus Heights will open its 1,200 foot rink on November 17, near the Macy’s store. But instead of ice, skaters will glide on a surface of synthetic ice – consisting of a plastic sprayed with what’s called a glide agent. Ice skaters had a preview of this at the California State Fair, where an Alameda company put its innovation on display. That company, BH Skating Parks, says synthetic ice is a tenth the cost of real ice to install and maintain. It’s a little slower, however … which might be safer for the many learners who step on the ice at malls.
