The California Nurses Association negotiated with UC Davis for six months, before reaching the new contract. It will cover about 2,100 registered nurses at the UC Davis Medical Center. Beginning January 1, the nurses will be paid for rest breaks that they miss due to emergencies, heavy work load or other pressing factors. This is among the first such agreements in the nation within the public sector. The cost could be high. Nurses receive a half-hour meal period … and 3 15 minutes breaks on a shift. It puts a quarter million dollars in extra salary into play every day … and is a strong incentive against understaffing.
