The Race for Secretary of State

The reliability of electronic voting machines has been a key issue in the race.  In a debate broadcast by KPIX TV, Democrat Debra Bowen said too much about the state’s process to certify machines is under wraps.

“The only way to reassure people is to open up this whole process.  Open up the certification, open up the testing, open up the reviews…”

Incumbent Bruce McPherson counters that his standards for machine certification are among the toughest in the nation.  And he says the electronic systems reach out to more voters.

“The blind and disabled communities with these electronic voting systems, for the first time in their lives, are able to vote privately and independently as required by law.”

While being the top state elections official is the highest profile aspect of the job,  the tasks also include keeping the public archive, and recording all official acts of the state legislature.
