The Election Assistance Commission has been investigating misuse of federal Help America Vote Act -or HAVA - funds by California under former Secretary of State Kevin Shelley.  He resigned last year amid the allegations.  According to a commission report, the state owes the federal treasury about 500-thousand dollars….and California’s HAVA account 2.4 million, to replace funds that were not properly spent.  Secretary of State Bruce McPherson is asking the state Attorney General to sue Shelley for the money.

“Californians should not be required to foot the bill for his personal political ambition and mismanagement of the office.”

When he resigned last year, Shelley denied any wrong-doing.  The Attorney General’s office says it will review the Secretary of State’s request.  McPherson, a Republican, is running for re-election.  His Democratic opponent, state Senator Deborah Bowen, calls the move to sue Shelley “political grandstanding.”
