The City of Citrus Heights and Sunrise Marketplace have received a $100,000 grant to pay for community forums and consultant work to help rejuvenate business. Sales exceeding $500 million a year already take place in the Sunrise Marketplace, which has about 500 businesses, including the major mall tenants. The 10-block area finds itself competing with malls in Roseville, Folsom and elsewhere. One idea gaining currency is taking advantage of the huge parking lot by Sunrise Mall. The Sacramento Capitols tennis team had played there in front of several thousand fans. The city envisions other large events, sporting or otherwise, to generate traffic and tax dollars.
