Environmentalists plan to buy 1,000 acres in the Sierra Buttes – Lakes Basin area. It’s about a 2-hour drive from Sacramento…just northeast of Nevada City.
"And it’s just a gorgeous area that has beautiful Buttes that overlook the lakes that sort of look like a mini Swiss Alps – they’re very craggy and snow-covered all year round."
Lori Oberholtzer with the High Sierra Rural Alliance says by purchasing the land they’re protecting it from people building homes and other development.
The $5,616,000 they’re using to buy the land comes from a state grant awarded by California’s Secretary for Resources Mike Chrisman who says California’s Sierra Nevada region is facing serious threats.
"The growing population, the moving of people into the Sierra Nevadas and trying to protect these most valuable landscapes for our children and grandchildren."
The grant is part of Proposition 50 - a general obligation bond passed by voters four years ago to protect habitat and water quality.
